Why is rain appropriate on Thai New Year?
Water plays a big role in Songkran. In Thailand, you pour water on the Buddha statues, over the shoulders of your elders; and the streets are just one huge water fight. It's also the hottest time of year over there. I've never been to Thailand for New Year, but I'd like to experience it sometime.
I was in Bangkok for Songkran last year and it was a crazy experience. Pick-ups cruise around town with people in the back with barrels of water WITH ICE to randomly throw at people. One afternoon, I was doused with ice-cold water by several people walking back from the flower market in the afternoon and in the evening (I don't know what possessed me) I decided to go to Khao San Rd (backpacker's haven) where there was a crazy street party going on: everyone was hopped up on alcohol and pills, soaking wet, smearing a clay-like substance on each other's faces and jumping up and down to awful Thai techno.
I think you'd like it :)
