Battered chicken skin was thin, hot, crisp and excellent, and stayed that way for a while -- I don't know what people are griping about. Maybe it wasn't as salty as I'm used to, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Bird was really moist and tender.
The sides could use some help, though. Napa cabbage slaw with sweetened vinegar and limp worms of red onion was just meh. Doug's mac and cheese was not what we'd hoped it would be -- soft, collapsed pasta tubes tossed with what tasted like smoked gouda. It's not for me.
I think the thing to do is to make your own sides, bring them to the apartment of a friend who lives in Chelsea, and order bird delivery. Though at that point, and at $21 for 8 small pieces, you should probably just learn to make your own fried chicken.

what people are gripping are about is exactly what you point out in your last sentence.
high prices yield high expectations. at $21 for 8 small pieces, why f--- around? just head over to blue ribbon bakery and order their fried chicken. free bread included and we know how much you like your bread basket.
hi-yah!
i must admit that i miss pollo campero. it was cheap, not so greasy, and quite tasty.
did u get a dipping sauce for your chicken? i noticed the girl sitting next 2 me got a orange mayoish looking sauce and when i asked her about it she said she didn't ask 4 it. weird.
i got a little cup of white vinegar with a couple of chilies floating in it. no mayo sauce. did you get that?
i got the vinegar cup with peppers the first time. the second time i got nothing! i thought they were just being cheap, but then the girl next to me got that orangey sauce! now am i crazy or did i get slighted. cuz the guy at the counter stopped smiling at me when i didn't give him a tip. i mean he's not a waiter, he's a cashier!
As David Chang from Momofuko would say: "It's all about consistency man."
Sorry to say, but this joint ain't got none.
Chalk one up for "WTF?"
I loved this review - short, to-the-point, with just the right amount of information. Thank you!
I've been to Dirty Bird 3 or 4 times, and I've had most of the menu. I'm 100% in agreement that the sides need some work. While the potatoes showed some promise, the third time around they were dry and overly salted. The best thing, beyond the chicken being free range, are the chicken tenders. The sauce is "sweet and sour," and you may as well ask for it. I wish they had barbeque sauce. That hot pepper in the vinegar is not even worth mentioning.
Bionicgrrl,
Sounds like your a good chef, why don't you open a restaurant.
