Bettola

So maybe you've been wondering, whither the restaurant reviews? Doesn't Ganda eat out anymore? Let me tell you something: My duodenum's been sitting on the couch watching TV in stiff boxers all day for many years, but I've got news for it. It's gonna start paying rent around here or it's gonna get K-Feded to the curb.

Introducing the first of what I hope will be many reviews on websites and in publications I let my Mae look at:

I'm a fan of EDOW, but it's irritating that you'd cite that tired stereotype about the UWS: "a crowd that doesn’t know the difference and probably doesn’t care." Not only are there as many discerning diners in the 'hood as in any other in Manhattan (or Brooklyn), but the restaurants that have opened in recent years--Bettola and about a dozen others--reflect it.

Round one goes to RB. Let's keep this clean and above the belt.

Very cool. Congratulations!

RB, you're right. The UWS is foodieland -- Zabar's, Fairway, Citarella, Greenmarkets have long proven that. But the people I saw in the restaurant were couples ordering single entree pizzas, girlfriend dates with glasses of red wine. I observed no palpable excitement from the diners or waiters about the menu, so I wanted the review to reflect that. The fact that I'm trying to clarify that now means that it didn't come across in the piece; to paraphrase 99 Ranch Market, for 100 I try harder.

My name is Ganda. What kind of name is France Gall?
