Bike Parking!

Fuck me, 11pm and I still haven't posted for the day?  NaMoBloPo is going to kick my ass, I see.

I parked my bicycle in my work building for the first time today!  They just announced bike parking in the building and I couldn't be more thrilled.

Nevermind that there are only four spots for a building that spans the entire block with 16 floors.  I am going to put a placard on my portion of the rack, pee on it a little and set up camp.

I am having trouble finding proper bike fashion, though.  I wind up wearing bike clothes (light but warm, visible, unrestrictive, able to get dirty) and changing into work clothes (professional but colorful).  But if I'm taking the train home and I'm feeling too lazy to switch back, I wind up in getups like this one.  (Why am I sharing this strangely angled picture which makes me look like I have the legs of an obese toddler?  Because that's all I got for NaMoBloPo and you are going to have to deal with it.)

Bike parking at work, I'm so jealous. that's great. I can bring my bike upstairs and keep it near my desk, but must go up the freight elevator which opens at 8am and closes at 5:30pm - and Ileave later than that mostly, so it's a pickle.

When you take the train home, do you schelp your bike on the train with you or leave it at work?

I like the outfit! I love color and I hate matching.

Are you sitting on something for the picture or can you really levitate like that?

Lynn: I schlep the bike on the train. But I did that yesterday only because my friend is visiting from Sweden and after dinner, I didn't want to send her on the subway home alone. Usually I would ride home.

Amelia: That is the power of my thick dwarf trunk core.

yay biking to work! I totally used to have the schlepping too many clothes around/changing/multiple shoes problem too.

also, you know about the new bicycle access to buildings law, right? this one: http://www.livablestreets.com/streetswiki/bikes-in-buildings

Exciting! I used to bring my bike up to my office in the freight elevator until the building manager found out and I got in trouble.

Then Nicole Dyer, Mark Jannot and I lobbied said building manager for about a year. But Nicole got in an argument with her and she basically told us to eff ourselves and never added the racks.

How did the bike racks end up being put in? Did PopSci make peace with the building? Did you have anything to do with it? Did Jonas step in? So curious!

Wish I could take credit, but I think it's the new law mentioned in Eileen's comment above.

But I haven't seen the 9th floor parking yet. I'm going to go check it out.
